Don't Forget: Drink a FREE Beer—Or Two

Free Beer is not just about snappy, brilliant musical parodies, but also, it is informative and beneficial for your life. The link is from Scientific American, you know it is legit as PBS advertises on their site. I am not sure if I agree with the “moderate” part, but whatever.

Don't Forget: Drink a Beer—Or Two—Daily!
Study in rats suggests long-term, moderate consumption of alcohol improves recall of both visual and emotional stimuli

Week 3 Recap
A good week overall, the OG Missy had a good crew there; the bartenders were of course fantastic and happy to see Missy again. We did have a very weak toast, maybe worst ever, which leads me to the fact that we are starting to get into the heart of Free Beer. The Don’t Forget part is also a call out to people to not forget about Free Beer. Attendance outside of week 1 has been, well, less then stellar. Free Beer is a great thing, people who go, do not complain, they always have fun, it is kind of like a vacation to Hawaii, it always goes well. With that being said, I will actually miss the next two weeks due to work travel. Free Beer will continue. The greatness is still going on. Toasts in my absence should be lead by Wilhelm, Kopets, ex-intern, whoever is part of the regular group. Even though we never really watch the game, this week is a good one.

Where Everybody Knows FREE BEER

Making your way at Sally’s today takes everything you've got.
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.

Wouldn't you like to get away?

Sometimes you want to go

Where everybody knows FREE BEER,
and they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows
FREE BEER.

You wanna go where people know,
people are all the same,
You wanna go where everybody knows
FREE BEER.

Week 2 Recap
I struggled with doing a TV theme song two weeks in a row and you kind of need to hum the background music to yourself, but this one is pretty good (impossible to top last week). It especially is fitting because one of the OG’s of Free Beer flew in from Chicago for this week. Missy (aka Moo) is in town, one of the only people the bartenders ask for by name. Last week was good, the crowd was definitely down, not sure why, but this week we have more grand expectations. My arrival will be even earlier. I plan to be there by 6, come one, come all.

Fresh Prince of FREE BEER

Now this is the story all about how
My life got flipped, turned upside down
And I’d like to take a minute just sit right there
I’ll tell you how I became the prince of a Bar called FREE BEER

In Larimore born and raised
On the playground where I spent most of my days
Chilling out, maxing, relaxing all cool
And all shooting some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys said "we’re up in no good"
Started making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
And said "you’re Drinkin with your aunte and uncle At FREE BEER"

I whistled for a cab and when it came near the
Licensplate said "BEER" and had a dice in the mirror
If anything I could say that this cab was rare
But I thought now forget it, yo home to FREE BEER

I pulled up Sally’s about seven or eight
And I yelled to the cabby "yo, home smell you later"
Looked at my kingdom I was finally there
To settle my throne as the prince of FREE BEER

Week 1 Recap
The glory of Free Beer was back. It was a great time, great turnout, amazing service as always. We had a good crowd for the 6 PM Kickoff and a Great crowd for the 9:15 kickoff. The Free Beer was flowing, our great bartender was 100% on her game, everything about Free Beer and why it is such a great event was evident.

Finger Eleven Reivew

Mark of MarkandRachel had an idea that we (and his wife Rachel of MarkandRachel) attend the Finger Eleven show at Station 4 in St. Paul. I was game as I had never been to Station 4, and quickly made myself aware of the two songs that Finger Eleven are known for (paralyzer & One Thing) and are pretty good. The price was also right, $15 at the door, this also allowed us to avoid the oppressive Ticketmaster fees, which would have almost doubled the price. Pure evil.
A band called "Sick Puppies" opened, not bad, they have the backing of a major label and were decent. Then Finger Eleven came on, the lead singer had a good voice, odd manuerisms, reminded me of Aaron Lewis of Staind. Overall a good show, the venue was small, decent sound, had massive problems with support poles right in the middle, but overall a good place to see a show.
Again, this reminded me that we all need to get off our butts and see some live music, odd for me to hit a smaller club, but I need to do this more often. Mpls/St. Paul has a strong music scene, we should try and support it.

Summer Concert Series

Not a great year for concerts, but nothing to shake a stick at as well. I will mostly talk about the RATM show that I had the privilege to attend at Alpine Valley on 8/24. Rage was the big band that all of us have never seen, the holy grail of live acts.

Rage Against The Machine

A combination of our maiden voyage to Alpine Valley outside of Milwaukee, a great venue, combined with PIT tickets (more on that later) and RATM. Ingredients for the show of the year. It was. Rage was at their crazy, talented, political selves. Tom Morallo continues to be worth the price of admission, he is mesmerizing. How many people can use their guitar cord and it makes sense and sounds awesome?

The crowd was in a frenzy, we were able to procure PIT tickets, so of the 36,000 people at the show, 35,000 were behind us. The PIT was dangerous, intense, and again proved I can still hang in my old age. When Rage would be building the intensity you could prepare yourself for the onslaught. Zack De La Rocha can whip the crowd into a furry unlike anything I have ever, EVER seen before. "Freedom" during the encore will play in my mind for a very long time.

Queens of the Stoneage Opened. Coming off a horrible experience with them when they opened for NIN, they made up for it this time. Good show, the drummer continues to be the hardest working man in show business.

Kings Of Leon

The critics love this band, they are becoming super popular. A good show, but I expected more, they did not have the intensity and connection with the audience that I am always looking for.

Prince

During his big 7-7-7 day, I was able to get free tickets to his Target Center show, even though I am not very familiar with all his music, it was someone who is considered a great live act. He is. My assumption of Prince is he must be some reclusive freak who is talented. On stage, he has maybe the most charisma of anyone I have ever seen. Great guitar, great vocals, great big ego. Overall a good show, he had a poor ending, but I will not hold that against him.

Dave Matthews Band

He played a work event that I attended, he was also playing alpine the two nights after RATM. At the work event. Two words. Super stoned. Not too into DMB anymore, glad he still shows the benefit of an ensemble with Horns and Violins and stuff, but not into his 21 minute jams.
